    Spring Business Exchange Luncheon

On Wednesday, April 20, 2016 the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County held there Spring Business Exchange Luncheon at IRSC Dixon-Hendry Campus. The event began at 11:45 AM as guests attended to their stomachs and proceeded to the Opening presentation from Chamber Director at Large Mr. Bobby Keefe.

Mr. Keefe reviewed the happenings at the Chamber since the last quarter. Since February (1st Quarter) the Chamber has gained 7 new members and has grown by 31 new members since this time last year.
Mr. Keefe went on to introduce some of the new things happening at the Chamber such as the Business Spotlight Campaign, Dollar a Day Marketing Plan, The Chamber Ambassador Program, Web Portal Workshop and Leadership Okeechobee. In wrapping up his presentation Mr. Keefe congratulated the Chamber Top Ten for this quarter and they are as follows CareerSource Heartland, Okeechobee Main Street, Inc., The Lounge at Sacred Sanctuary, LLC, CASTLE, Primerica, Anderson Realty Co., Okeechobee Waterfront Rentals, Brown Cow Sweetery, Gilbert Family of Companies, Total Roadside Services, LLC. The Chamber Top Ten is based on a point system automatically tallied by our operating system Chamber Master the categories are Web portal completeness, Event attendance, Events Sponsorships, Programs used on the website and Membership Status.

Our main presenter for the day Ms. Cindy Moran with Predictive Results then took the floor and explained the difference in personalities and how certain personalities would be better suited for a particular job than others. Ms. Moran mainly spoke on “How to Hire and Retain the Best People” and really wanted to drive home how important our job searching can be whether we are the employee or the employer. With a tool called the predictive index one can assess themselves or potential employees to find how well the individual would do in a particular job or setting. Ms. Moran does seriously caution employers not to use the data alone to make a decision to hire someone or not because like any other tool it must have someone to put it to use. Just because you have a hammer doesn’t mean the nail will nail itself.

Our final presenter Mr. Jerry Butler is the Veterans Representative at CareerSource Heartland. Mr. Butler’s presentation was to connect the dots using tools such as the predictive index and hiring employees or providing training for potential employees. Mr. Butler explained that there are two sides of the house at CareerSource Heartland. A team dedicated to helping employers find candidates that have the skills, degrees, certificates or whatever is required for the position needed. And a completely separate team whose job it is to match potential employees with jobs in a field they would like to be in or they would be qualified for due to their credentials.

All together a wonderful group of informative presenters who gave us all a lot of information that will be very useful to our businesses. As always if you have a topic you would like to see come up at a future Business Luncheon contact Mariah Parriott at (863) 467-6246 or email to info@okeechobeebusiness.com.

Please remember you do not have to a Chamber Member to attend these events and we would love to see you there! Summer Business Exchange Luncheon to be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2016.
